An eternity ring is a band set with an unbroken line of matching diamonds, and it stands for never-ending love. It's usually given to mark a milestone in a marriage, such as a big anniversary or the birth of a child, and it's most often worn on the left ring finger with the engagement ring and wedding band. A full eternity ring has stones all the way around. A half eternity ring has stones across the top only.
Here's what the ring means, when to give one, how to wear it, and how to choose between full and half eternity.
A circle has no beginning and no end, so rings have long stood for lasting love. An eternity ring adds a continuous line of stones to that idea: love that keeps going, year after year. Giving one as an anniversary gift became popular in the 1960s, and today it's one of the best-known ways to celebrate a long marriage.
It isn't only for anniversaries. Some people choose an eternity band as their wedding ring, and many wear one simply because they like the look.

There's no rule, but these are the most common moments:
A milestone anniversary. The first, 10th and 25th are popular. Diamond jewelry is the modern gift for the 10th year. See our 10 year anniversary gift ideas and the full list of anniversary gifts by year.
The birth of a child. An eternity ring is a classic push present.
A vow renewal. A new ring to go with renewed promises.
Your wedding day. Some brides choose an eternity band as their wedding ring.
An anniversary ring is any ring given to mark a wedding anniversary. Many anniversary rings are eternity or half eternity bands, but it can also be a three-stone ring, a cocktail ring or a band that matches the engagement ring. So an eternity ring can be an anniversary ring, but an anniversary ring doesn't have to be an eternity ring.
Most people wear an eternity ring on the left ring finger, with their engagement ring and wedding band. A common order is the wedding band first, closest to the hand, then the engagement ring, then the eternity ring on the outside. Some people place the eternity ring between the wedding band and the engagement ring instead, or wear it on the right hand. Any of these is fine.
For the order of the first two rings and the traditions behind it, see how to wear an engagement ring and wedding band. For ideas on combining bands, read how to stack rings, and for what each finger stands for, see ring finger meaning.

Stones. Full: all the way around the band. Half: across the top, usually about half of the band.
Look. Full: sparkles from every angle, even when the ring turns. Half: sparkles on top, with plain metal underneath.
Comfort. Full: stones sit between your fingers, which some people notice. Half: smooth metal underneath, often more comfortable for everyday wear.
Resizing. Full: hard to resize, and often not possible, because there's no plain metal to work with. Half: usually easier to resize.
Price. Full: more stones, so usually higher. Half: fewer stones, so usually lower.
There's also a three-quarter eternity ring, with stones around about three quarters of the band, which sits in between.
Because a full eternity ring is hard to resize, get the size right before you order. Our ring size guide shows how to measure at home.
A half eternity ring means the same as a full one: lasting love. The stones only go halfway, but the meaning doesn't change. Many people choose a half eternity ring for comfort, or because it sits more neatly beside an engagement ring.

A seven-stone ring has no fixed meaning. Seven is often seen as a lucky number, and some people choose seven stones to mark seven years together. Others simply like how seven stones balance across the top of the finger. Our Bezel Oval and Bezel Pear half eternity bands each have seven diamonds.
A three-stone ring, by comparison, is often said to stand for the past, the present and the future.
There's no set time. Most are given on a milestone anniversary or after the birth of a child, but you can give one, or buy one for yourself, whenever it feels right.
No strict rules, only habits. An eternity ring usually comes after the wedding, is often in the same metal as the engagement ring, and is usually worn on the same finger.
A popular idea lists four: a promise ring, an engagement ring, a wedding band and an eternity ring. It's a modern saying, not a tradition you have to follow.
Not quite. A wedding band is given at the wedding, and an eternity ring usually comes later. But an eternity band can be worn as a wedding ring.
