In the US and many other countries, a ring on the left ring finger usually means engaged or married. A ring on the right ring finger often means a wedding ring in countries such as Germany, Norway and Russia, and elsewhere it's simply a style choice. The other fingers have older meanings from tradition and palmistry, but none of them is a rule.
Here's what each finger is said to mean, and how the meaning changes between the left and right hand.
Thumb. Traditional meaning: independence, willpower and self-confidence. Today: mostly a fashion choice, often for a wide or bold ring.
Index finger. Traditional meaning: leadership and authority. In the past, family signet rings were often worn here. Today: a popular spot for a statement ring.
Middle finger. Traditional meaning: balance and responsibility, as it sits in the center of the hand. Today: a neutral place for a ring that carries no relationship meaning.
Ring finger. Traditional meaning: love and commitment. Today: the finger for engagement and wedding rings in most countries.
Pinky finger. Traditional meaning: communication and relationships. Signet rings are also worn here. Today: a stylish place for a small or slim ring.

The left ring finger is where most people in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia wear an engagement ring and, later, a wedding ring. An old belief says a vein runs straight from this finger to the heart, called the vena amoris. It isn't true in anatomy, but the idea helped make this finger the symbol of love.

The meaning of the right ring finger depends on where you live:
A wedding ring. In countries such as Germany, Norway, Russia and Poland, and in some Indian traditions, wedding rings go on the right hand.
A promise ring. Many people wear a promise ring here, so it isn't mistaken for an engagement ring. See what finger a promise ring goes on.
A right-hand ring. A ring you bought for yourself, with no relationship meaning at all.

A right-hand ring is a ring, often with diamonds, that you wear on your right hand to mark something personal: a birthday, a new job, a milestone or simply a treat for yourself. It doesn't have to go on a particular finger. The ring, middle and index fingers are all popular.
Because it isn't tied to a relationship, you can choose any style you like. Our fine jewelry rings are a good place to start.
A ring on the middle finger has no relationship meaning in most countries. Traditionally it stands for balance and responsibility. Many people choose it for a larger ring, because it's the longest finger and a bold design sits well there.
No finger has an agreed meaning for single. In the US, the clearest sign is a bare left ring finger, because that's where engagement and wedding rings go. A ring on any other finger usually says nothing about your relationship status.

Yes, quite a lot. The hand for a wedding ring changes from country to country, and some faiths have their own guidance. For example, some Muslim scholars advise men not to wear rings on the index or middle finger. In Canada, many engineers wear a plain ring on the little finger of their working hand as a symbol of their professional duty.
If you're giving a ring to someone from another culture, it's worth asking which finger and hand they'd expect.
The ring finger. The left hand usually means engaged or married. The right hand is often used for a promise ring or for a relationship that isn't heading to an engagement yet.
Not in general. Some religious or family traditions have their own guidance, but you can wear a ring on any finger.
Yes, though most people find that rings on two or three fingers look more balanced. For ideas, see our guide on how to stack rings.
