An engagement ring is given at the proposal and usually has a prominent center diamond. A wedding ring is exchanged during the wedding ceremony and is usually a simpler band. One marks the promise to marry, and the other marks the marriage itself.
You don't need both. Many people wear the pair together, some wear only one, and some choose a single ring that does both jobs.
Purpose. Engagement ring: a promise to marry. Wedding ring: a symbol of the marriage.
When it's given. Engagement ring: at the proposal. Wedding ring: during the ceremony.
Who wears it. Engagement ring: traditionally one partner, though both can. Wedding ring: usually both partners.
Design. Engagement ring: usually a center stone in a raised setting. Wedding ring: usually a low band, plain or with small diamonds.
Cost. Engagement ring: usually the larger purchase, because of the center stone. Wedding ring: usually less, though a full diamond band can cost more than you'd expect.

An engagement ring is the ring given when a couple agree to marry. It's worn from the proposal onward, usually on the left ring finger in the US. The center diamond is the focus, and the setting, such as a solitaire, a halo or three stones, gives the ring its character.
Because it sits higher on the finger, an engagement ring needs a little more care. Prongs can catch on fabric, and it's worth having them checked from time to time.
A wedding ring is the ring exchanged during the ceremony. It's made to be worn every day for decades, so it usually sits low on the finger, with no raised stone. In many couples, both partners wear one.
In everyday use, no. "Wedding ring" and "wedding band" usually mean the same thing. Some people use "band" for a simple, even circle of metal or diamonds, and "ring" for any ring worn to mark a marriage. A jeweler will know what you mean with either word.

No. There's no rule, legal or otherwise, that says you must have both. These are the most common choices:
Both, worn together. The most common choice in the US. A guide to wearing an engagement ring and wedding band covers the order and the options.
A matching set. A bridal set is designed so the two rings sit neatly side by side, which takes the guesswork out of pairing them.
The engagement ring only. Some people wear it as their wedding ring too.
A wedding band only. A good choice if a raised stone doesn't suit your work or your style.
You'll hear plenty of advice about what's correct. Most of it is custom, not rule:
Which goes on first? Tradition puts the wedding band closest to the heart, so it goes on first, with the engagement ring above it. Plenty of people prefer the reverse.
Which hand? The left hand is the US custom, but some countries use the right. See what finger a wedding ring goes on for the details.
Do they have to match? No. A mix of metals or styles can look deliberate, as long as the two rings sit comfortably together.
Do you have to wear both at once? No. Many people wear only the band for work, travel or the gym.

The engagement ring usually costs more, mainly because of the center diamond. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, as reported by the jewelry trade, put the average at about $7,000 for a natural diamond engagement ring and about $4,300 for a lab-grown one. Wedding bands vary widely, from plain metal to a full circle of diamonds.
If you're planning for both, set the total first, then divide it. Our guide to how much an engagement ring should cost walks through it.
Buy the engagement ring with the band in mind. A very low setting or a wide shank can leave a gap beside a straight band.
Match the metal, or mix it on purpose. The same metal looks seamless. Different metals look intentional if you choose them that way.
Try them on together. Two rings feel snugger than one, so check the fit with both on the finger.
Yes. A diamond band works well as an engagement ring if a raised stone isn't for you. Some couples then add a second band at the wedding.
Some do. It's less common than a wedding band, but there's no rule against it.
