The best time to buy an engagement ring is about two to three months before you plan to propose, not a particular sale date. That gives you time to compare diamonds, have the ring made and fix any sizing. Black Friday can be a good time to buy, but only if you check that the deal is real.

Here's how Black Friday compares with the rest of the year, which times to avoid and how to tell a true discount from a marketing one.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy an engagement ring?

It can be. Many jewelers run promotions in late November, so you may find a genuine saving. But there are two catches:

  • A big percentage doesn't prove a good price. A "50% off" label means little if the starting price was inflated. Compare the stone itself, not the discount.

  • Timing can be tight. Black Friday falls just before the busiest stretch of the year for proposals and for shipping. If you're proposing at Christmas, there's little room for anything to go wrong.

So treat Black Friday as a chance to buy a ring you've already researched, not as the moment to start. Any House of Diams offer will be shown on the site at the time. We don't promise sales in advance.

The best time of year to buy diamonds and jewelry

No month is reliably cheapest, but some patterns are useful:

  • Outside the holiday rush. Demand for jewelry peaks from November to February. You'll have more time and more attention from a jeweler in the quieter months.

  • Late January and after Valentine's Day. Once the season ends, the pressure eases and some sellers run offers.

  • Summer. Often a quieter time for jewelers, which suits a slower, custom project.

  • Late November. Promotions are common, as long as your timeline allows for it.

Lab-grown diamond prices have also fallen over time, so waiting months for a sale matters less than choosing the right stone. Lab-grown vs natural diamonds explains how the two compare.

The ideal timeline before you propose

  1. Two to three months before: learn and compare. Read how to choose a lab-grown diamond, and set your budget with our guide to how much an engagement ring should cost.

  2. Eight to six weeks before: order. Every House of Diams piece is made to order. Standard pieces usually take about 16–22 days in total, and bespoke rings typically take about 3–4 weeks, depending on the stone. These are estimates, not guarantees.

  3. Two weeks before: check it. Inspect the ring and the certificate, and confirm the size. Our returns page explains your options.

  4. The week of the proposal: relax. You've left room for surprises.

When to avoid buying an engagement ring

  • The week before a holiday. Couriers are stretched, and a made-to-order ring may not arrive in time.

  • When you're rushed. Any seller's countdown clock is a reason to slow down, not speed up.

  • Before you've set a budget. It's easy to overspend on a "deal" you didn't plan for.

How to check whether a diamond discount is real

  1. Ask for the certificate. A grading report from a lab such as GIA or IGI tells you exactly what you're buying.

  2. Compare like with like. Match the shape, the 4Cs and the metal, then compare the final prices across sellers.

  3. Check the price history. Save the page in the weeks before the sale. If the "sale" price is the same as the normal one, it's no saving.

  4. Read the small print. Check whether a promotion excludes the stone, and whether shipping, duties and returns have changed.

  5. Look at the total. Add delivery, duties, sizing and insurance. At House of Diams, delivery is free and insured and duties are included in the price.

More questions about when to buy

Is it cheaper to buy an engagement ring in January?

Sometimes, but not reliably. It's often a good time for attention and availability, since the holiday rush is over. Compare actual prices instead of relying on the month.

Do diamond prices drop at certain times of year?

Prices tend to follow the wider market more than the calendar, but individual sellers run offers at certain times. Lab-grown diamond prices have moved far more than natural ones in recent years.

How far in advance should you buy an engagement ring?

Two to three months is a comfortable target. It's possible in less, but it leaves less room for changes.
