A promise ring can go on any finger, and there's no fixed rule. Most people wear it on the ring finger of the left hand, the same place an engagement ring goes, or on the ring finger of the right hand so nobody mistakes it for an engagement ring.
Which one you choose depends on what the ring means to you and how you'd like others to read it. If you're still deciding what it means, start with what a promise ring is.
Left ring finger. What it says: a serious commitment that may lead to marriage. Keep in mind: people may assume you're engaged. You'd move it when an engagement ring arrives.
Right ring finger. What it says: committed, but clearly not engaged. Keep in mind: this is the most common way to avoid confusion.
Middle finger. What it says: a personal vow or a gift to yourself. Keep in mind: it's the largest finger, so measure carefully.
Index finger or pinky. What it says: more about style than commitment. Keep in mind: it's less likely to be read as a promise ring at all.
On a chain. What it says: private and close to the heart. Keep in mind: it's a good choice if you work with your hands or want to keep it to yourself.

Either hand is fine. The left hand signals a relationship heading toward marriage in countries where wedding rings go on the left, including the US. The right hand keeps it clearly separate. In countries where wedding rings are worn on the right, such as Germany and India in some traditions, you may want to reverse this.

No. There's no real tradition that says so. Superstitions about wearing a ring on the wedding finger before marriage are personal or family beliefs, not rules. If it bothers you or someone close to you, the right hand is an easy alternative.
Talk about it. If you're a couple, agree on what the ring means first. That usually settles the question of the finger.
Think about who will notice. If you don't want to answer questions about being engaged, avoid the left ring finger.
Consider your work. If you use your dominant hand a lot, wear it on the other one, or on a chain.
Measure that finger. Sizes differ between fingers and between hands, so a ring sized for the left may not fit the right. Our ring size guide shows how to measure.

You've got several good options:
Move it to the right hand. The most common choice. It keeps the promise ring in daily use and makes room for the engagement ring.
Stack it. A slim band can sit beside the engagement ring if the two fit well together.
Wear it on a chain. A good way to keep it close when it no longer fits your stack.
Keep it as a keepsake. It marks an earlier chapter, and there's no rule that says you must keep wearing it.

Yes. Men usually wear them on the same fingers: the left or right ring finger. A plain band or a ring with a small diamond suits this well. Couples often buy a pair, so each of them has a reminder.
It can, but only until you get engaged. Many people choose the right hand from the start, to avoid having to move it later.
Yes. It's often a choice for a self-promise, or for someone who just prefers the look.
No finger has one fixed meaning. Placement mostly signals how public or formal your promise is. The ring finger suggests a romantic commitment, and other fingers are more personal.

Slim bands and small diamonds work well on any finger. See our fine jewelry and diamond bands, and use our size guide before you order.
