Engagement season runs from about late November to mid-February, roughly from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day. It's the stretch of the year when the largest share of US couples get engaged. The Knot's 2025 Real Weddings Study, as reported by the jewelry trade, put it at 47% of proposals in this window.

Here's why it happens then, which dates are most popular and how to plan if you're thinking about proposing this year.

Why do so many proposals happen in winter?

  • Family is close by. Holiday gatherings mean you can share the news in person, or even propose with everyone there.

  • People have time off. A break from work makes it easier to travel and to plan something calm.

  • The season feels romantic. Lights, snow and a sense of occasion all help.

  • There's a natural next step. The start of a new year feels like a good time to begin planning a wedding.

December has come out on top in several of The Knot's studies, usually with somewhere around one in six proposals. The exact figure changes from year to year and survey to survey, but December's lead has been consistent.

Holiday dates dominate, though the order shifts depending on the survey. These are the days that come up most:

  1. Christmas Eve

  2. Christmas Day

  3. New Year's Eve

  4. Valentine's Day

Treat this as a guide to popular days, not an exact ranking. A date with personal meaning, such as your first date or an anniversary, can mean more than a date on this list.

Thanksgiving proposal ideas

Thanksgiving is where the season begins, and it has one big advantage: the people you love are often in one place.

  • Before the meal. Propose privately in the morning and share the news at the table.

  • On a family walk. Slip away after dinner, just the two of you.

  • With a thank-you. Tell them what you're most grateful for, and let that lead to the question.

Ask your hosts first if you plan to do it in front of everyone. It's their day as well.

How to plan for engagement season

The main thing to manage is time. Count back from your date:

  1. Start looking early. Give yourself a couple of months to learn the basics and compare rings. If you're starting from scratch, read how to choose a lab-grown diamond.

  2. Allow for making and delivery. At House of Diams, every piece is made to order. Bespoke rings typically take about 3–4 weeks in total, depending on the stone, and standard pieces usually arrive in about 16–22 days. These are estimates, not guarantees. See how long a custom engagement ring takes.

  3. Leave a buffer. Plan for the ring to arrive well before the day. Holiday shipping is busy everywhere, and you may want time for sizing.

  4. Confirm the size. Our ring size guide explains how.

  5. Set the budget. Our guide to how much an engagement ring should cost can help you pick a number.

Is it a good idea to propose during engagement season?

If the timing feels right, yes. The main downside is that you're not alone: restaurants and photographers book up early, and travel costs more. If you'd like a quieter moment, a date outside the season is just as valid.
