Most lab-grown diamonds are made in China and India. China produces huge volumes, mostly with the HPHT method, while India's growers favor the CVD method and the country leads in cutting and polishing. Smaller amounts are grown elsewhere, including the United States.

This note reflects what was reported up to November 2026. The market moves quickly, and the figures below are estimates that vary by source.

Where lab-grown diamonds are grown, country by country

  • China. The largest producer by volume, with a strong focus on small stones made with HPHT presses. An IDEX report from May 2026 says China claims a 63% share of global production.

  • India. Growers mostly use CVD. The same IDEX report puts India at around 15% of production, and other estimates are higher, so treat any single figure with care.

  • United States. A small but established producer. The US matters far more as the biggest market for lab-grown jewelry.

  • Other countries. Smaller volumes are grown in other parts of the world.

Growing vs cutting: two different maps

Where a diamond is grown and where it's cut are often different places. A rough stone may be grown in one country and cut and polished in another, then set into jewelry somewhere else.

India is the center of the cutting side. It cuts and polishes a large share of the world's diamonds, both mined and lab-grown, and trade data reported by Angel One put its share of global lab-grown diamond exports at 35.73% in 2025, against 9.7% for China.

Why Surat matters

Surat, in the Indian state of Gujarat, is the country's best-known diamond city. Generations of cutters have built up their skills there, and the workforce, equipment and trading networks that served mined diamonds have also served lab-grown stones. Many lab-grown diamond businesses have grown up around the same trade, and the city is also home to the Surat Diamond Bourse.

House of Diams has its workshop base in Surat. We cut and process our own stones there, make every piece to order and keep a New York office for our US customers. Our About page tells that story, and how diamonds are cut and polished walks through the craft itself.

The lab-grown diamond market in 2026

Three trends stand out in this year's trade reporting:

  • India's exports have shifted. Commerce data reported by Angel One showed India exporting 7.05 million carats of lab-grown diamonds from January to May 2026, against 6.70 million carats of natural diamonds. That's by volume, not value.

  • Natural stones still make up most exports. ICRA, an Indian rating agency, put lab-grown diamonds at 8.5% of India's cut and polished diamond exports in the first ten months of fiscal 2026, and expects 10–12% over the next two to three years.

  • Competition remains strong. With more capacity in both China and India, lab-grown diamond prices have come down over time. That's good for buyers, but it's also a reason not to treat a stone as an investment.

Does it matter where a lab-grown diamond is made?

For how the stone looks and lasts, no. A diamond's quality comes down to its cut, color, clarity and carat weight, not its country. What's worth checking instead:

  1. The grading report. It's independent proof of the stone's quality and that it's lab-grown. Our GIA vs IGI guide explains what to look for.

  2. The growing method. It doesn't decide quality on its own, but it's useful to understand. See CVD vs HPHT.

  3. The seller. If the country or working conditions matter to you, ask directly. A good seller will answer you plainly.
